The basics you need before the analysis

Most weak analyses fail on the basics: who tells the story, what kind of text it is, and what the words in the answer actually mean.

The unreliable narrator

A narrator who insists on his own sanity while describing a murder tells you two things at once: what he says, and what his way of saying it reveals. The reader has to read past the voice. Once you notice the gap between the account and the events, the whole text opens up.

  • Citation

A reference showing where information comes from, so the reader can check the source.

  • Critical thinking

Weighing claims against evidence, considering who is speaking and why, and being willing to change your view when the argument is better.

  • Foreshadowing

Hints early in a text that prepare the reader for what comes later.

  • Imagery

Language that appeals to the senses and creates pictures in the reader's mind.

  • Irony

A gap between what is said and what is meant, or between what a character expects and what actually happens.

  • Narrator

The voice telling the story. A first-person narrator takes part in the events, a third-person narrator stands outside them.
