Social media are digital platforms built on user-generated content, where what we see is curated by algorithms rather than chosen at random. This changes more than how we chat. It shapes what we think is normal, attractive or successful, because we constantly compare our ordinary daily life with other people's edited highlights. A useful habit is to treat your feed as a designed text: someone built it to hold your attention, and asking how it does that is already analysis.
Just as earlier writers imagined political dystopias, today's storytellers imagine technological ones. They take a current trend and push it one step further to expose its dangers, which is exactly how good science fiction works as social criticism.
